GATEKEEPER
"Like recent releases by Jakes and Joker, this kicks to the floor the notion that Bristol's dubstep scene is in any way wafty or overly-cerebral. Both of these tracks from the ex-Skull Disco producers look back sonically to a time before Techstep was named as such, when every dubplate in a Kemistry & Storm set would thrillingly wrong-foot you with its crispness and controlled aggression. But at 140 bpm that element of control is even more pronounced than at 180, as is the sense of space: the final whipcrack snare that releases the wound-up tension of each bar in'Hades' and the kidney-punch bass notes punctuating'Tomb', like a martial artist's blow pulled back at the exact point of contact, demonstrate the violence the music could inflict without actually inflicting it.
