Information:

UWE Bristol and Arnolfini present Meriç Algün discussing the themes of her exhibition Day Craving Night, including desire, separation and boundaries. Introduced by Spike Island director Robert Leckie.

Meriç Algün questions perceived systems and restrictions in a world preoccupied with individualism, consumption and borders. Her work concentrates on issues of identity, borders, bureaucracy, language and translation through appropriated and “ready-made” texts, collections and archives. Born in Istanbul and living and working in Stockholm, a key role in Algün’s practice is played out in the contrasting differences between the socio-political constituents of both cities, as well as her movement between the two.

Day Craving Night, Algün’s current solo exhibition runs until the 8th December at Spike Island, Bristol. The works form a spatial collage drawing analogies between love, nature and culture. Combining a wide range of resources from the Carboniferous period to today, Algün continues to draw parallels between intertwining notions of geological and human boundaries; what drives us apart and what happens in the space in between.

Algün has held many solo exhibitions in Europe and has participated in numerous international biennials such as SALTWATER: A Theory of Thought Forms, 14th Istanbul Biennial (2015); Between the Pessimism of the Intellect and the Optimism of the Will, 5th Thessaloniki Biennial (2015); All the World’s Futures, 56th Venice Biennale (2015); Leaving to Return, 12th Bienal de Cuenca, Ecuador (2014); You Imagine What You Desire, 19th Sydney Biennial (2014).
