Emma Jean-Thackray ~ corto.alto ~ Rebecca Vasmant ~ AKU! ~ Worm Disco Club

This will be the second of two special nights focusing on contemporary 'Jazz' music as part of Worm Disco Club's partnership with the 2020 Bristol Jazz & Blues Festival.

Steadily growing in presence of late, Worm Disco Club have been consistently offering Bristol an exciting mix of top up and coming acts and selectors. For those that know, the events offer a warm welcome with a strong eye and ear for the details that matter.

For this event they will be presenting some hugely talented and exciting young musicians from Glasgow and London. Revelling in the now - the vibrant energy of these new Jazz forms.

Emma-Jean Thackray.

A talent of undeniable breadth, Emma is an alumni of Trinity College London (a Masters in Composition no less), a former RBMA collaborator, and a wonderful Trumpet player with equal vocal and production skills to match. Her star is steadily rising and over the past year she has performed with the London Symphony Orchestra, written music for BBC Radio 1, guested on a track with Scrimshire (Wah-Wah 45's) and become part of Neue Grafik's band.

She will be joined by her band 'Walrus' featuring Elliot Galvin on Hammond Organ, Ben Kelly on Tuba & Liz Exell on Drums.

corto.alto are an 8 piece collective assembled by Trombonist/Composer Liam Shortall - a young Glasgow based musician that has REALLY caught our attention of late.

From his flat right in the middle of central Glasgow, Liam and his band have been writing, rehearsing, recording, and releasing a new collection of tracks every few weeks since May 2019. By simply uploading these videos to the band's facebook page he has made serious waves and gained thousands of followers who eagerly expect the new releases, without even playing many gigs....the music speaks for itself!

The talent on show across these home made videos from Liam himself, the fast rising piano and keys player Fergus McCreadie, drummer Graham Costello and singer kitti amongst others, paints a joyful picture of true friends enjoying performing music together and makes for an exciting view of what's bubbling up in Scotland right now. corto.alto is formed mainly of graduates from the Glasgow Conservatoire's Jazz course, who have all got years of experience of playing with each other in various outfits, with fantastic interplay & comping during solos, the musicianship really is something to behold! With ballsy and experimental song writing drawing on all kinds of influences from Jazz, neo-soul, Hip-Hop, Dub & even Classical music, they have a fresh sound, reminiscent of a Scottish version of Snarky Puppy!

AKU! are an explosive trio of trombone, saxophone & drums whipped up by an insane amount of punk-Jazz energy! Featuring 3 incredible up and coming players (who also form part of corto.alto); Harry Weir (Sax), Liam Shortall (Trombone) and Graham Costello (Drums) are three madmen on a mission to blow your brains out with their 'Death Jazz' . The ferocity of a hardcore punk band meets jazz....

Rebecca Vasmant

Closing out the evening, Rebecca is a DJ who has been making serious moves this last year. Also from Glasgow, her passion for music, in particular for Jazz & the emerging new sounds of Scotland come through on her monthly Worldwide FM show.

A DJ of considerable experience in knowing how to make people dance, she has a vast collection of records and an accomplished ability to 'join the dots' as Gilles Peterson would say. She was asked to play the closing set at Gille's Worldwide Festival in Séte last summer, directly after the man himself, no doubt a great moment and honour for any DJ.

Making her Bristol debut, Rebecca will be gracing the turntables for the final 2hrs to keep you wriggling and moving on this special evening.

Worm Disco Club

Jackson, Jake and Nathan Worm, aka team Worm Disco Club will share DJ duties before and in between the bands.

Tickets will also be on sale via Bristol Ticket Shop and Resident Advisor.

Early Birds: £10 (limited)
General Release: £13.50 (lots of)
Final Release: £15 (for snooze-worms)

Doors 8pm first band on at 9pm sharp.

Join us for an evening of emerging talent stretching both the idea of, and accessibility of Jazz based music in 2020. Strictly good vibes.
