What it is
This two day workshop examines through making, screening and discussion experimental animation.
What you’ll do
Through making, screening and discussion you will explore 16mm Bolex camera single frame animation. In small groups you will devise and shoot a short film (that may include techniques and methods such as pixilation, time-lapse and stop motion) and develop it in the BEEF dark room. A context for the imaginative use of animated film will be mapped out through the study of work by artists such as Margaret Tait, Norman McLaren, Marie Menken and Sarah Pucill.
Who is it for
Those wanting to learn analogue film-making or 16mm animation techniques; moving image makers; others who wish to understand the field of experimental animation. Come with no knowledge but a curiosity, be prepared for the slightly unpredictable outcomes and working around constraints that are a part of DIY film process, leave with a comprehensive knowledge of the field, extensive practical know how and your own animated film.
Skills you will learn
Shoot and develop, learning frame by frame techniques, you will learn how to operate a light meter, use a bolex camera, and learn how to develop black and white film eco processing in the darkroom.
Tutor Vicky Smith has been making and writing about experimental animation since 1990. Her work revolves around processes and themes of contact, traces and stains. She has run filmmaking workshops at Lux, London, Bristol Arnolfini and Bristol Experimental Expanded Film (BEEF) and in numerous other contexts. She recently published 'Experimental & Expanded Animation: Current Perspectives and Practices', co-edited with Nicky Hamlyn.
