Andy is a prolific composer and arranger - although his own groups feature him on trumpet he also plays drums to an equal extent, and has performed with many big names in this capacity.
Having grown up in Croydon, he took up a place at Bristol University to read Psychology and ended up settling in the city.
After graduating from Bristol University in 1988 Andy attended the Banff Summer School in Canada, a one month post-graduate level course directed by Dave Holland, with other tutors including Kenny Wheeler, Kevin Eubanks and Muhal Richard Abrams.
Over the past 30 years Andy has become well known in Bristol both as a performer and as organiser of weekly jazz venue The Be-Bop Club. He has released several CDs of his music, and appeared on four programmes of BBC Radio’s Jazz Notes during the 1990s. Besides his jazz activities he has played in many other settings, including the albums by Portishead, various theatre productions, TV [Waking the Dead, Cold Lazarus] and the soundtrack of the motion picture "A Good Woman" starring Helen Hunt & Scarlett Johannson.
In 2016 he appeared as part of the Pee Wee Ellis and Fred Wesley Back To Jazz Big Band, performing at Bristol Jazz and Blues Festival and Ronnie Scott’s Club. 2017 saw repeat appearances at both venues as part of a big band backing USA trumpet legend Bobby Shew in a programme celebrating the centenary of Dizzy Gillespie’s birth. In 2019 Andy played for the first time with legendary UK jazz composer Mike Westbrook as part of his Uncommon Orchestra, and post-Covid the band has appeared at Cheltenham and Cambridge Jazz Festivals, the Rossini Festival in Lugo, Italy and Ronnie Scott’s 2022 and 2023.
Andy is also well known as a jazz educator, having taught under the banner of Bristol Jazz Workshops for over two decades. This has led on to tutoring for several jazz summer schools and residential weekends, including CL Jazz, Music For You, Gloucester Academy of Music, Dartington and Falmouth-Yamaha. He has also acted as an external examiner for the Royal Welsh College Jazz Degree Course.
