No B/S Double Bill: Stir Crazy and Bad Boys

— Arnolfini
A double bill of Black Comedy genius.
time:17:00
price: Headfirst Tickets

Information:

Bristol programming collective Come the Revolution presents back to back double bills celebrating Black Comedy genius. Buddy Movies have been a vehicle for introducing Black comedy talent to mainstream cinema audiences and we celebrate that through two classic films on 18 January: Bad Boys starring Will Smith & Martin Lawrence and the all-conquering duo Richard Pryor and Gene Wilder in Stir Crazy.

Stir Crazy (1980)

Directed by Sidney Poitier

Certification: 15

Runtime:106 minutes

Following the box office success of Silver Streak (1977), Richard Pryor and Gene Wilder teamed up again for the hilarious Stir Crazy, a film about unemployed friends who decide to head West to seek fame and fortune. However, they are soon given 125-year prison sentences after being framed for a bank robbery. While in prison they befriend other prison inmates. They try to keep their sanity and their lives amidst: a sadistic warden, a hulking mass-murderer and an inter-prison rodeo - all with great hilarity. This film also went on to become Hollywood acting legend Sidney Poitier’s most successful directorial project.

This screening is part of NO B/S! A film season that is part of Comedy Genius, a national celebration of comedy onscreen, led by BFI, the Independent Cinema Office and BFI Film Audience network, supported by funds from the National Lottery. #BFIComedy

Bad Boys (1995)

Directed by Michael Bay

Certification: 18

Runtime:119 minutes

Miami detectives Marcus Burnett (Martin Lawrence) and Mike Lowrey (Will Smith) race against time when $100 million worth of heroin they recently confiscated is stolen from station headquarters. Suspecting it was an inside job, Internal Affairs gives them five days to track down the drugs before they shut down the narcotics division. They track the thief into the Miami underworld, dodging bullets and bad guys along the way. Action meets farce when Marcus is compelled to masquerade as his partner in order to gain the trust of a key murder witness (Tea Leoni) in their investigation.

This screening is part of NO B/S! A film season that celebrates the many tones of Black comedy.
