Evan Parker and Trance Map+ at Arnolfini
See event details

A gig held at Arnolfini on Friday 7th November. The event starts at 19:30.

An evening of freely improvised music in two parts: an introductory solo performance by Evan Parker, followed by Trance Map+ (Evan Parker, Matt Wright, Filipe Gomes), combining acoustic and electronic instruments and the possibilities of real-time processing.

Evan Parker will perform on soprano saxophone. He has pioneered extended techniques for the instrument, using circular breathing and overtone manipulation, creating a hypnotic and densely-textured 'illusion of polyphony' from a single, solo instrument. Evan’s 80th birthday was recently marked by the release of 'The Heraclitean Two-Step, etc.' a 4 CD set of solo improvisations, including recordings made over a four year series of visits to the same studio (a former chandlers overlooking the harbour in Ramsgate); and at the Unitarian Chapel in Warwick, re-investigating acoustics he had played and recorded in thirty years before.

Evan Parker and Matt Wright’s Trance Map project has included improvised live events across Europe and the US, often involving other invited guest performers (indicated by the +), with various recordings released on psi, Intakt and FMR Records. For this performance, Evan and Matt will join forces with long-time collaborator, sound artist Filipe Gomes. Evan and Matt recently released 'Marconi's Drift' with an international Transatlantic Trance Map (+), recorded simultaneously in the USA and UK (False Walls, UK), and ‘Horizons Held Close’ (Relative Pitch, USA). Evan and Filipe (Arco Barco, Ramsgate Radio) also recently collaborated on Daniel Blumberg’s Oscar-winning score for the film The Brutalist.
