A very special event to mark the closing weekend of Adore, Garry Fabian Miller’s film works will be presented with live responses by performers including the Fitzhardinge Consort, Alice Oswald, Dan Johnson, and Kathleen Frances.
Since its founding in 2000, the Fitzhardinge Consort has brought international-standard, rarely-performed choral music to the South West of England and beyond. On top of this, the choir has an ambitious programme of charity, education and outreach work in the pipeline, designed to bring music to those that need it most but hear it least. Directed by Peter Wagstaff, the choir sings regularly across the region to great critical acclaim, and has quickly become known for its exciting and original interpretations of Renaissance and Baroque music, as well as new works of living composers. For this special Adore event, they will perform a programme including works by William Byrd and JS Bach.
Alice Oswald is the author of 11 collections of poetry. She often works in book-length projects and is known for her interests in gardening, ecology, and music. Her second book, Dart (2002), was the outcome of years of primary and secondary research into the history, environment, and community along the River Dart in Devon, England. Oswald’s many honors and awards include the T.S. Eliot Prize (2002), the Griffin Poetry Prize (2017), an Eric Gregory Award, an Arts Foundation Award for Poetry, a Forward Prize for Best Single Poem, and a Ted Hughes Award. In 2019, she became the first woman to be appointed as Oxford University Professor of Poetry, a four-year tenure.
An active participant in the Bristol DIY alternative/underground scene, drummer, performance artist and teacher Dan Johnson is known for organising a range of DIY events. He has been a popular house drummer at multiple venues in Bristol, holding several long-term residencies from Funk & Hip Hop to the Experimental & Avant-Garde. He has toured the UK & Europe extensively including dates at Ronnie Scott's, the Jazz Cafe, Centrum Kultury Lublinie, and Kulturhaus Karlstorbanhnhoff. In addition to his many collaborations he is a keen solo artist intent on pushing the boundaries of improvisation, sound & rhythm. Some of Dan's projects and collaborators, past & present, include: EP/64, Run Logan Run, DJxKWF, Yama Warashi, GNOD, Tina Hitchens, MXLX, Loick Essien, Faith Bekoe, Ben Vince, and Ossia.
Kathleen Frances is an artist and producer who grew up in Bristol. Celebrated for her strikingly warm, rich vocals over keyboard accompaniments, she was a finalist in Glastonbury’s Emerging talent competition in 2020. Since then, Frances has gone on to play festivals across Europe including Pitchfork Paris and a sell-out headline London show at Servant Jazz Quarters, as well as contributing to Secretly Canadian’s 25th anniversary celebrations. Her debut EP, Through The Blue, was released to critical acclaim in March 2022.
