ÂELLIN + JAUSMĖ at Ashton Court
See event details

A gig held at Ashton Court on Friday 7th April. The event starts at 20:00.

For fans of folk and ambient music, this is a rare opportunity to experience moving new sounds in experimental folk instrumentation, set in the stunning long hall of the Grade I listed Ashton Court Manor. This concert will be seated in an intimate, in-the-round setting, and will feature narrative songwriting, cast with a plethora of organic and textural instrumentation, including folk finger-style guitar, double bass, cello, percussive sound design, granular synthetic textures, augmented harmonic vocals, sub-bass, maybe a tin whistle - and unbridled literary reference.

Visiting from Lithuania, Jausmė brings the kanklės (the traditional Lithuanian 29-stringed zither-harp) and her extraordinary song-craft. A unique and arrestingly beautiful voice, Jausmė is an artist who has been heralded for bewitching audiences in any language.

This is set to be a very special evening, and a coming together of two experimental projects that are rooted in traditional instrumentation.

DOORS: 7.45pm
Music begins: 8.15pm

ÂELLIN

Âellin is the folk ambient songwriting project fronted by multi-instrumentalist and lyricist Siân Magill.

Moving away from traditional songwriting structures, the project seeks to unpick real-world emotive and visceral experience. Working with literary reference and intertextuality, the songs explore concepts of memory, unconscious experience and the diffusion of linearity. The audio-world meanders through a diversity of genres, working with a rich canvas of textural elements including folk guitar, jazz guitar, percussion, double bass, cello, ambient synth and synth bass.

Principally, ÂELLIN is an evocation of joy, curiosity, grief and love - and a reflection of the eternal search for connection, communion, and silver-lining songs.

Jausmė is a composer, singer, songstress, and one of the not-so-many artists who decided to spread the word about the kanklės, the traditional Lithuanian zither-harp, beyond the borders of Lithuania. In her compositions, with the help of her voice, 29 strings, Lithuanian and English languages she weaves the styles of folklore, soul, minimalist into a cosy blanket, decorated with elements of dub, jazz, post-rock, electronica and other genres she enjoys.

After half a decade of musical work (solo and other projects, documentary soundtrack in collaboration with BBC, electronic music collaborations, organising events) and life in Bristol, UK, the performer came back to the motherland in the summer of 2020. There, inspired by her roots, familiar forests, language, people's stories and musicians such as Thom Yorke, Moses Sumney, The Cinematic Orchestra, Lianne La Havas etc., in the beginning of 2021. In March 2022, she released a live, one-take solo album 'Namolio' (en. Homeward) about her journey back home and to her authenticity, through losses and discoveries, realisations and unlearning.

Jausmė continues to spread the word, that music isn't just a party tool, but also a great medium to help us feel and let go, to share our depths, consciousness and virtues. Also, that we have to try and stay authentic to our true selves, whilst the modern world is trying to frame, govern and define our freedom.
