Estimated Time: Approximately 4.5 hours

The Route

This scenic loop begins on Ashton Road, where convenient on-street parking is available. The walk starts by heading into the green expanse of Greville Smyth Park. From this community hub, you will transition into the Brunel Open Space, which leads you directly to the banks of the River Avon.
Once you reach the riverside, follow the path as it winds past Burwalls Wood and the mysterious Burials Cave. As you continue through the dramatic Avon Gorge, the trail climbs into the heart of Leigh Woods. This ancient broadleaf woodland is a local treasure, famous for its dense carpets of bluebells in the spring and a vibrant, fiery canopy during the autumn months.
Deep within the woods, the track leads you to the edge of the gorge at the Quarry Viewpoint, offering sweeping views of the city and the historic Celestine excavations from the late 19th century. From there, you will discover Stokeleigh Camp, the impressive earthwork remains of an Iron Age hillfort. To finish the journey, follow the woodland paths back down toward the riverbank, where you can retrace your steps through the parks and back to the start.

Dog-Friendly Tips

Leads: While Leigh Woods is very dog-friendly, the National Trust side (near the Suspension Bridge viewpoints and Stokeleigh Camp) requires dogs to be kept on a lead.
Off-Lead: The Forestry England side of the woods generally allows dogs off-lead, but please keep them in sight as there are often grazing cattle (Red Devons) in the area.
Waste: There is a dog waste bin located at the North Road entrance to the woods
