As part of the Bristol Shakespeare Festival, GB Theatre presents The Merchant of Venice:
'The quality of mercy is not strain'd, It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven, Upon the place beneath.'
Directed by Louise Hill
Antonio doesn't know why he is so melancholy. His friend Bassanio is in love with the beautiful Portia. To woo her he borrows money from Antonio who in turn needs to borrow as his fortune is tied up with the business ventures at sea. So he turns to the man he has repeatedly insulted Shylock. The Jewish moneylender can put all of the jibes and insults aside but he wants a bond a pound of flesh nearest the merchant's heart. This is the backdrop to his dramatic and romantic favourite of the Bard which promises adventure, love and a heart-stopping courtroom drama!
