RTB Spoken Word on May 2nd are delighted to present the first in a new series, 'Outlook' - a night of live poetry and discussion. May 2nd will feature a fantastic line-up of poetry from women of colour, talks and performances from some of the most outstanding writers both inside and outside of Bristol!

We welcome four incredible poets Indigo Williams, Shagufta K, Simran Randhawa and Anita Barton-Williams to the brand new 1532 Performing Arts Centre at Bristol Grammar School.

The event is open to everyone, and will include four poetry features, an exclusive talk from a gal-dem magazine representative (online magazine written by women of colour), a live discussion with some of the poets as well as an audience Q&A, all hosted by Malaika Kegode.

INDIGO WILLIAMS

Indigo Williams is a poet and co-founder of I Shape Beauty, who use poetry, video mapping, costume and visual art to explore the issues that impact women of colour.

After bursting on to the poetry scene in 2010, Indigo established herself as an artist who commands the stage with gripping presence and powerful poetry. With both substance and passion, her work is emotive and thought provoking.

She has also facilitated workshops across Europe, Bangladesh and Nigeria, is a spoken word educator, and works full-time in a secondary school as part of a programme in conjunction with Goldsmiths University.

Her work has appeared on BBC Radio 4’s Bespoken Word, Tedx Brixton, Glastonbury Festival and Cheltenham Literature Festival.

SHAGUFTA K

Described as one of the most talked about performers in the region, Shagufta K is a powerful and brave voice. Her vivid thought provoking work beautifully transports audiences to a world where gender, race, and culture are examined through a fresh, passionate and exciting perspective.

She has been performing and leading workshops for several years and has studied English Literature, Creative Studies and Gender Studies at Bath Spa University and Swansea University. She has an interest in Post-Colonial studies, representation of South Asian women in literature and national identity.

She is interested in bringing poetry to a wider audience, particularly through the use of spoken word, and theatre. To provoke thought, and challenge the stereotypes that govern our media. To highlight how occupying a position between spaces and cultures allows the artist a unique way of reflecting on the world we live in.

SIMRAN RANDHAWA

Simran is a poet, writer, sociology undergraduate, model, and Assistant Politics Editor for the innovative Women of Colour magazine gal-dem.

Her writing specializes in topics which affect the South Asia diaspora, and she first performed poetry at Raise the Bar with an incredible performance at the Watershed last year which you can find here:

ANITA BARTON-WILLIAMS

Anita Barton-Williams is a Roundhouse Poetry Slam finalist and member of Roundhouse Poetry Collective 2015 – 2016.
She is an emerging artist on the London poetry scene and is particularly interested in exploring Black British womanhood; both lived and shared experiences through her work.

She is also founder of Heaux Noire, the UK’s first Open Mic night dedicated to Women of Colour that aims to provide a platform and safe space for WoC to share their work.

Malaika is a Bristol based spoken word poet, and also an event co-ordinator running 'MILK Poetry' in Bristol. Her powerful and emotive performances approach difficult topics of loss and struggle, aiming to resolve them through realism and optimism, and balancing breath-taking imagery with effortless rhythm and cadence.
