Forbidden Worlds of the Deep | Dir: Michael Anderson | 1977 | USA | 93 mins | Cert. 12A
In the wake of Jaws (1975), there were countless imitators that tried to capitalise on the blockbuster’s box office success with their own unique take on the ‘man vs. shark’ story. All around the world, numerous studios and film-makers tried to replicate the film’s success with their own unique take on the film and producer Dino de Laurentiis was no different!
The story goes that de Laurentiis tasked spaghetti-western writer Luciano Vincenzoni to "find a fish tougher and more terrible than the great white". It wasn’t long before he settled on the Orca - and yes, we know it’s not a fish!
Initially on the hunt for a great white shark, the obsessive Captain Nolan (Richard Harris) accidentally kills a pregnant orca. Seeking vengeance, her mate begins to terrorise the nearby fishing village in a rampage of death and destruction. Realising that only he can bring an end to the carnage, Nolan sets out on a deadly quest to face his enemy from the deep…
Also starring Charlotte Rampling and Bo Derek, Orca is one of the most memorable Jawsploitation movies ever made!
The film will be preceded by a presentation from Rob Hill, host of the Borrowing Blockbusters YouTube channel and author of The Bad Movie Bible, who will showcase the best, the best-worst and weirdest Jaws knocks-off from around the world.
There will be a 15 minute break between the presentation and the start of Orca.
Thanks to StudioCanal, we shall be screening the 4K restoration of Orca.
