Forbidden Worlds of the Deep | Dir: Lewis Teague | 1980 | USA | 91 mins | Cert. 15
Inspired by the urban myth about baby alligators being flushed down toilets and flourishing in the sewers of New York (not to mention the resurgence in monster movies in the wake of Jaws), Alligator saw director Lewis Teague (Cujo) and screenwriter John Sayles (Piranha, The Howling) team up for this B-movie with bite. Plus our festival Legend, Gale Anne Hurd, even worked on the film early in her career as both a PA and 2nd AD on the 2nd Unit!
A family returning from Florida decides their pet baby alligator is too much to handle and flushes him down the toilet. Meanwhile, Slade Laboratories is conducting secret experiments with animals and disposing of them in the sewer.
The alligator, fending for itself, begins to feed on the dead animals, and grows. Now, twelve years later, after several mysterious murders, David Madison (Jackie Brown’s Robert Forster) is on the case to find out who ... or what ... is killing people.
Full of camp fun and gory horror, this video shop favourite (and clearly a product of the Jawsploitation genre) is the perfect B-movie to end the festival with.
Just make sure to keep an eye out for the rumoured Bristol Crocodile as you walk home…
We’ll be screening the stunning new 4K restoration courtesy of Scream Factory.
