YOUNG SHERLOCK HOLMES + CAST Q&A at Bristol Megascreen, Bristol Aquarium
Headfirst Editor's Pick

"This criminally underrated family adventure finds a teenage Holmes and Watson interrupting their boarding school hijinx to hunt down a sinister Egyptian death cult (as you do). Produced by Spielberg and writer Chris Columbus (Gremlins, Home Alone) at the peak of their powers, come relive Young Sherlock’s 80s fantasy revelry with an introduction by Sherlock himself! "

Most film festivals would immediately gravitate to Back To The Future or The Goonies when looking to celebrate the 40th anniversary of a perennial 80s classic… but not us!

Less well-known than those two Spielberg-produced smash hits is Young Sherlock Holmes, which these days act as a sort of proto-Harry Potter adventure as Holmes (Nicholas Rowe), Watson (Alan Cox) and their friend Elizabeth Hardy (Sophie Ward) sneak around gothic buildings trying to solve a murderous conspiracy.

The film was written by Chris Columbus, the director of Home Alone and the first two Harry Potter films, who started his career as a screenwriter penning the beloved horror-comedy Gremlins. After that film caught the attention of Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment, Columbus was soon churning out classic 80s family films including The Goonies (1985) and Adventures in Babysitting (1987).

Directed by Barry Levinson, the film is a classic adventure that combines classic Sherlock Holmes tropes with more contemporary Indiana Jones influences. In fact, in some countries, the film was released as Young Sherlock Holmes and the Pyramid of Fear.

The film is also notable for including the first fully computer-generated photorealistic animated character. Created by Lucasfilm's Industrial Light & Magic, the character (which we won’t spoil) would pave the way for the likes of the water tentacle in The Abyss (1989), the T-1000 in Terminator 2: Judgement Day (1991) and the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park (1993).

This special 40th anniversary screening will be followed by a Q&A with cast members Nicholas Rowe and Sophie Ward hosted by film critic Sarah Williams.
