CLASH OF THE TITANS + The Mythological Influences of Ray Harryhausen at Bristol Megascreen
Headfirst Editor's Pick

"Release… the Kraken! Before the coming of the CGI gods, there was stop-motion visual-effects wizard Ray Harryhausen. His final film, Clash of the Titans, is bursting with delirious handcrafted FX marvels: winged horses, sea monsters, four-armed lizards, all more lifelike than Laurence Olivier himself! Come celebrate the 45th anniversary of a true sword and sandals classic, with a mythological introductory talk by Connor Heaney."

In what would eventually end up being Ray Harryhausen’s final picture, he returns to his beloved mythological era with the epic tale of Perseus vs. the Kraken.

With a budget bigger than all his previous films combined, Harryhausen and director Desmond Davis were able to gather an incredible cast for this sweeping tale including legends such as Laurence Olivier, Maggie Smith, Burgess Meredith and Ursula Andress, not to mention Harry Hamlin as Perseus.

However the actors are forgotten (sorry, Sir Laurence!) when compared to the incredible creations that Harryhausen and his team were able to realise for the film, including Pegasus, the half-man half-beast Calibos, the two-headed dog Dioskilos, the terrifying Medusa, Bubo the mechanical owl, vultures, giant scorpions and the Kraken, making Clash of the Titans, one of the richest in terms of Harryhausen’s creature designs.

The film will be preceded by a special talk from Vanessa Harryhausen and Connor Heaney of The Ray and Diana Harryhausen Foundation who will talk about how classical mythological influences had such a huge impact on Ray’s life and work.

There will be a 15 minute intermission between the presentation and the film.
