Dir: Richard Donner | U.S. | 116 mins | Cert. PG
When you think of Richard Donner, the chances are you immediately think of the likes of Superman, Lethal Weapon, The Omen or The Goonies, but there, in the esteemed director’s filmography, lies a largely forgotten gem - Ladyhawke.
Criminally ignored by the public upon its release, Ladyhawke is a dark gothic fairy tale that sees thief Phillipe Gaston (Matthew Broderick) befriend the mysterious Capt. Navarre (Rutger Hauer), a knight with a strange secret.
Cursed by the wicked Bishop of Aquila, Gaston and his lover, Lady Isabeau d'Anjou (Michelle Pfeiffer) are “always together, eternally apart.” By day she is a hawk, by night he is a wolf, with the two only able to see each other at twilight.
Will Gaston be able to help these doomed lovers break into the bishop’s stronghold and forever end his evil enchantment?
With its stunning Italian locations and oddly anachronistic Alan Parsons-produced soundtrack, Ladyhawke deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as the likes of The Princess Bride and Legend.
This film will be introduction by Sean Wilson, film journalist, podcaster and author of The Sound of Cinema.
