A night of lavish creativity, abundance and masquerade. Inspired by the museums current exhibition, Opulent Origins: 200 Years of Displaying Art. It marks the 200th anniversary by reimagining their predecessor, the Bristol Institution’s, first fine art exhibitions in the 1820s. We are also investigating their institutional origins and sources of wealth within the collections. Together we will traverse the theme of opulence, exploring their collections and delving into truths beyond the surface. Explore the history of the fine art collections with compelling social commentary on our contemporary world.

Alongside  Black* Artists on the Move who are synonymous with phenomenal art by people of colour, we will be bringing you experimental theatre and a host of performers to discover as you explore through the galleries.

INTRODUCING THE ARTIST.
Ophelia Honey (Genny Turray, she/they)  is a queer cabaret host and performer hailing from the creative warehouse communities in North Londo. She has performed across the world, you may have caught her this year at Glastonbury, Camp Bestival, Might Hoopla, Skate Love Barcelona, Electric Picnic, Shambala, Wilderness, The Cocoa Butter Club or local favourite Bethnal Green Working Men’s Club.
Ophelia is a consummate entertainer. Her witty banter, charisma, and connection with the audience create an immersive experience that lingers long after the curtains fall.

In Ophelia’s world, every performance is a political statement, a call to action, and a demand for change. She uses her art to question norms, challenge authority, and create a space for dialogue and transformation.

MoonFace. A  Experimental performer and clown Moonface (Meg Hodgson) will explore humanity’s relationship with our nearest celestial neighbour, and what happens when we give corporations free rein to make the Universe their own.

Oyster Juice, written and performed by Astro-Zenica & Elektra Du Boir (the artists James Crawley and Eleanor Bartram @houseofsavalon @astrozenica @elektraduboir). An experimental, cabaret-inspired work-in progress debuting for the first time.
Two billionaires in their commercial bunker, are surrounded by a marvellous collection of Fine Arts on the Edge of Human Time and Civilisation. What could possibly blemish their enjoyment of the beautiful bubble they have created for themselves? Oh wait, the Oysters have run dry…Come bejewelled as we reveal the Opulent Origins that may lead to humanity’s demise.”
Miss Dynasty! China born and bred Miss Dynasty will be serving glam oriental beauty inspired by the best of East meets West. A Bristol Asian queen, she’s here to celebrate identity and freedom.

BLACK Artists On The Move presents an intricate and intense entwining of music, poetic composition and dramatics courtesy of Maisie Ayodeji , Ronnie McGrath and the incomparable Amantha Edmead performing SOLD.
There is no gentle way of approaching historical and contemporary racism. The prize-winning show SOLD explores the agony of enslavement through the story of Mary Prince. This forgotten story relates one woman’s first-hand account of the brutality at the height of the trafficking of enslaved Afrikans.

SOLD is powerful and entertaining. Mary Prince’s true story is told with traditional African Griot storytelling fused with theatre, singing, music, poetry, drumming, and dance.
Ronnie McGrath’s poems slide seamlessly between past and present, examining the complexities of identity. Maisie Ayodeji, a queer artist, is performing songs from the heart.

Arty Activities
Throughout this night, you can engage in collective and individual art activities, conceptualised and facilitated by professional artists.
Artist Giuliana Terrain and her wonderful live models will guide you through life-drawing activities, inspired by Opulence and a reimagination of the past

Bryony Gillard is a curator, artist, and educator whose practice reflects upon events, creatures, and ideas that refuse to be pinned down or categorised. Join Bryony in creating a montage and remix of artworks and artefacts from the museum’s collection, in projected light and shadow.

David Alesworth is an artist, lecturer, and sculptor, whose  practice embraces ambiguity and improvisation. He will be joined by Eilis Kirby in providing a space for you to explore our origins based around narratives, texts, graphics and collaged elements.
Join artist Edwina Ashton for recycled costume-making and help us to create a huge reconstruction of one of the Opulent Origins paintings.
More surprises

The sounds are brought to you tonight by musician and DJ extraordinaire Dyver (@dyverofficial)
Parade through the galleries to find more surprises and set performances. Look out for the students from UWE students wandering throughout the museum in their own fabulous creations. On hand will be make-up artists Lewis Sharpe and Tia Smith to make you sparkle. Don’t forget to don your own most opulent garbs for the occasion – especially any with a Victorian, Georgian, or Edwardian flair.
This evening of mystique and exploration offers a chance to wander the galleries after hours, to enjoy a cocktail or two, and to luxuriate in the beautiful surroundings of the museum.

Remember to get your tickets here for an unmissable show!!! https://www.bristolmuseums.org.uk/bristol-museum-and-art-gallery/whats-on/the-museum-at-night-opulent-origins/
