See event details

A event held at Bristol Old Vic on Saturday 5th October. The event starts at 11:30.

GATHER UP hosts a day long workshop four times a year, inviting celebrated artists from across the UK to share their dance and choreographic practice and current research interests in a spirit of reciprocal enquiry.

These workshops are open to the curiosity of people aged 18+ who work with contemporary dance, movement improvisation, choreography or other movement practices.

'World building'

In this workshop you will be invited to a rigorous play of movement and text to create your own fictional world. The relationship of the performer to their own space will be explored to bring alive the role of fiction. I will introduce the idea of "Scale" to cultivate a greater range of movement and expression. The workshop is aimed at professional artists and they would be invited into a space of permission and ease to work solo and work with what's present "in the room". I will be sharing my movement practice and offer elements from my solo making.

About Akshay Sharma:
Akshay is an independent choreographer and performer born and brought up in India and based in London. He trained at the Northern School of Contemporary Dance in Leeds and since has been working with choreographers and making his own work. He is interested in choreography as organisation, practice as returning to the relationship between the craft and self, the value of emotions as sources of information. He works with principles and values simplicity, clarity and honesty in movement. In the studio he appreciates focus, play and immersion.
He looks at choreography as organisation and explores it using Indian classical music, here creatively informing the dramaturgy of the work. He is touring his solo work "Can This Place Be A Temple?" and working on a new production.
His choreographic work has been supported by London Contemporary Dance School, Arts Council England, Dance Umbrella Akram Khan Company, Northern School of Contemporary Dance, Yorkshire Dance, Kala Sangam, Dance City and Chandigarh Sangeet Natak Akademi.
