Big Jeff's Art Across Bristol Billboards at Bristol Streets
See event details

A event on Friday 2nd April. The event starts at 09:00.

Big Jeff is a cherished, integral part of Bristol. Known for his obsession with all things music, many confess that a gig is just not the same if Big Jeff isn’t there. This year though, Jeff has revealed another facet to his creative loving personality. After encouragement, he opened up about his passion for painting and, of course, receiv¬¬ed the warmest of welcomes both regionally, nationally, and internationally.
"Hoping that these paintings will bring colour and the light of hope to our streets.
I hope they encourage people who are down to look up!" - JEFF
Now, for two weeks only, a series of billboards in Jeff’s hometown will display selected works, forming an outdoor gallery to be enjoyed in a safe and accessible way. The open-air exhibition has been brought to life in collaboration with the BUILDHOLLYWOOD family of JACK ARTS, DIABOLICAL and JACK and forms part of their ongoing Your Space Or Mine initiative which gives artists and creatives a platform on the street.
“Art for me has been about expressing emotions I can’t explain another way. These paintings highlight my issues with barriers and hidden anxiety and mental health. How people see me is one thing - but internally I sometimes feel completely different. I use art as a way of expressing things that aren’t always easy to discuss.” - BIG JEFF

“Placing art, music and culture in the hearts of our cities is what we do – we are proud to provide a platform to showcase Jeff’s powerful, personal body of work which explores his inspirations and emotions in such an evocative, vivid way. We hope the accessible exhibition, formed as part of our ongoing Your Space Or Mine project will be enjoyed in the city he is lucky enough to call home.” – MIRANDA BANFIELD, MARKETING MANAGER AT BUILDHOLLYWOOD

Jeff first put brush to paper when his Grandmother, a tapestry artist, gave him a set of paints. Whilst painting alongside her, it became clear to Jeff that painting helped him cope with the challenging encounters he was facing.

Jeff’s artwork has organically developed and tackles a poignant fear of expectation, self-reflection and ultimately, feeling uncomfortable in this world. It intends to spark an ongoing (and much-needed) conversation around mental health, disability and struggles adjacent to these issues. Jeff’s work has already sold to key figures in the music industry that have closely followed his journey thus far. This includes Gaelynn Lea, an American musician, Pete Judge, a Bristolian trumpeter, Connor O’Brien from The Villagers and Mary Ann Hobbs. The billboards found across his hometown this month mark just one of the exciting events planned for Jeff and his art this year, and we are just as excited as Jeff is.
