Si Paton is a composer, improviser, bassist, academic,
event curator, noisemaker, smart mouth and general
antagonist. Armed with both jazz chops and the ethos
of eg John Zorn, Keiji Haino, Butch Morris and Glen
Branco, they are a central force and interconnector
within Birmingham’s avant underground. In addition
to their main solo output and compositional ensembles,
they have played with figures such as Nils Økland, Øyvind
Skarbø, Chris Sharkey, Maria Chiara Argirò, Cath Roberts
/ Jena Jang, is one half of trans-Atlantic no wave duo
Phame / and runs the concert series and collective -.
Don’t Mind Control. Gaining a PhD in at Royal Birmingham
Conservatoire, his research, in particular concentrating
on composition for improvising large ensembles within
DIY and punk influenced contexts ; has been presented
at conferences across Europe.
