Join narrative designer Jack Lowe and writer Elinor Lower for a relaxed workshop exploring writing about / from our surroundings.
This guided workshop will feature warm-up exercises, solo writing time and an opportunity to share your work and connect with others, prompted by the environment around us and the new creative writing tool Pin The Tale.
No writing experience is necessary, but confident writers are absolutely welcome.
Based out of Cafe Kino, we will meet for some supported writing warm-ups to get us in the zone, before heading out and about to explore the outdoors for some solo writing time.
SCHEDULE:
18:30 – 18:55 – Meet + guided warm up writing exercises
18:55 – 19:10 – Pin The Tale - how to use it
19:10 – 20:00 – Solo writing time, out and about
20:00 – 20:30 – Return to base, open space for sharing writing with the group (optional!), feedback, editing exercises, reflection (to be decided on by the group)

ABOUT PIN THE TALE
Pin the Tale is a UK-wide digital story map that is freely accessible via web browser on smartphone, tablet or PC/Mac. Pin the Tale’s map uses the what3words grid, a system that divides the world into 3m x 3m squares and gives each one a unique three-word address. By interacting with the map, users are invited to write stories about places using all three words of the locations’ what3words addresses. Stories can take any creative form: poetic, fictional, historical, personal, playful, informative, imaginative.
TO BRING:
- Something to write with (your phone, your favourite notepad and pen…)
- A device that can access the internet (such as a phone) would be useful, for accessing the w3w prompts, but this is not a barrier if you don’t have one – we can aid with that.
- Weather-appropriate clothing, so you can explore the area to your heart’s content!

ABOUT THE ORGANISERS
Jack Lowe designs place-based games: interactive, playful experiences that create a sense of place or engage with real-world locations. Across formats including QR-code treasure hunts, narrative puzzle games, locative audio walks, board games and interactive theatre, Jack’s work is all about curiosity and mindful engagement with the world around you.
Jack is based in Bristol, where he is a resident of the Pervasive Media Studio and postdoctoral researcher at UWE Bristol’s Digital Cultures Research Centre.
Elinor Lower is a writer, director and cross-disciplinary artist. Across forms including theatre, film, immersive audio and print, their work explores queerness, environment and collectivism. Recent collaborators include Bristol Old Vic, The Egg Theatre, Exeter Phoenix and Platform. They are resident at the Pervasive Media Studio.

Access to Cafe Kino is step-free with an accessible toilet.
There is no requirement to leave the building during the workshop, if you prefer not to. what3words/Pin The Tale will be usable within the Cafe Kino building itself.
The workshop will be run in Spoken English.
