Join us in solidarity with Palestine for this film screening of Jumana Manna's 2022 film 'Foragers'. All funds raised will be donated to Medical Aid for Palestinians https://www.map.org.uk/.
About the film:
"Foragers depicts the drama, pleasures and difficulties in collecting wild food in occupied Palestine. Shot in the Golan Heights, the Galilee, and Jerusalem, this documentary melds dramatised scenes, reportage and archival footage to portray the impact of Israeli nature protection laws on traditional Palestinian food customs. Following the plants from the wild to the kitchen, from chases with Israeli state forces to the courtroom, this documentary highlights the resilience of Palestinian food culture despite arcane restrictions." – Bristol Palestine Film Festival (adapted from official description)
After watching the film, there'll be space for discussion and an introduction to herbalism for collective care. We’ll explore a range of different medicine making methods –from glycerites and tinctures, to balms, teas and decoctions– and focus on some local plant allies with Bristol-based foraging herbalists Maria & Ruby.
Thank you to the Bristol Palestine Film Festival for supporting us in organising this event https://bristolpff.org.uk/.
More information:
Palestinian history and culture has been written into the land by its people and plants through the tradition of foraging. In the face of huge fines, penalties, and aggressive attempts by the Israeli occupation to sever strong cultural ties to the land, foraging for food and medicine has become a powerful act of resistance, and is still intricately woven through Palestinian culture.
This film screening is a chance to learn from the resilience and bravery of Palestinians, and gain a deeper understanding of their deep and reciprocal connection to their land – a connection that has been passed down through generations through foraging and cooking with native edible and medicinal plants. It’s an opportunity to grow awareness of the many methods of oppression used by the Israeli occupation and how this has impacted every aspect of life in Palestine. We’ll share ideas about how we can continue to respond to the ongoing genocide and horrors unfolding in Gaza and how we can keep supporting Palestinians in their struggle for freedom and justice, as we explore our own relationships with the land as a way to grow collective resilience.
The screening will take place in Cafe Kino's basement event space, which is down one flight of stairs and therefore not wheelchair accessible. There'll be up to 20 folks attending. Please let us know if you have additional access requirements, or any further questions about the event.
