Will Guthrie
Will Guthrie is an Australian drummer / percussionist living in Nantes, France. He improvises and records using various combinations of drums, percussion, objects, junk, amplification and electronics. His bands include minimalist/maximalist free jazz trio THE AMES ROOM, in appalachian mutant folk duo ELWOOD & GUTHRIE, as well as the electro/acoustic improvised/composed ensemble THYMOLPHTHALEIN; his regular collaborators past and present include Jean-Luc Guionnet, Clayton Thomas, Scott Stroud, J r me Noetinger, Anthony Pateras, Erell Latimier, Matthew Earle, Adam Sussmann, Ferran Fages, Jean-Philippe Gross, Greg Kingston, Helmut Schafer, Keith Rowe, Ren Walters, Mark Simmonds and Snuff Puppetts.
One of the best respected improvisers of his generation, currently resident in Bristol. He's played with John Butcher, Evan Parker, Chris Corsano, Tony Conrad, Steve Reid, Angharrad Davies, Rhodri Davies, etc etc etc This will be his first solo performance in Bristol. Known equally for firey free jazz and modern-composition inspired reductionism he could be in either/both modes on the night. 'His range is just about unrivalled', The Watchful Ear; 'explosive bass-strumming', The Guardian; 'dextrous bass playing teems with energy', Nightshift.
Surprisingly new arrival in Bristol given his history with Hunting Lodge and Defibrillators. This BtB janitor's weapon of choice (for the next year, at least) when improvising is a stainless steel waste disposal sink, a found object played with other found objects, feedback or deployed for resonance. Besides the above, Cooke's studio creations involve found materials, field recording and processes and are available via his website:
