Neolithic long barrows and Bronze Age burial mounds were frequently built at inter-visible locations on hilltops and alongside rivers or springs, forming ‘ceremonial landscapes’ that may still be discerned today by those with eyes to see them!
Author of the acclaimed 'Aerial Atlas of Ancient Britain' (pub. Thames & Hudson) photographer David R Abram has been seeking out these forgotten ‘Barrowlands’ in Exmoor, the Mendips, South Dorset, West Wales and elsewhere, creating sequences of astounding aerial images that reveal how these sacred places often referred to particular features in the landscape, and were interlaced by long-distance pilgrimage routes.
Come and discover the wealth of ancient wonders on your doorstep through a unique and powerful new medium: aerial photography has the potential to unlock a whole new perspective on familiar landscapes, and to inspire us to visit new ones we never knew existed.
