Misscoteque Presents: Computer Love

~ Misscoteque is a lesbian-run space for women, non-binary, and trans folk ~ 

misscoteque.world has landed in the digi-verse, and we are throwing a party to celebrate!*

On 18th September at the Ciderbox from 7:30pm to midnight, we’ll be selecting dusty records from disco, soul, and gospel, to 80s electro and synth pop oddities. There will also be lots of chat about the new website, plus our community noticeboard, and an interactive archiving installation in partnership with Queer Telephone.

Queer Telephone is run by Machine Streams, a collective based in Bristol interested in building, subverting and hacking technology. Our own Missco telephone booth will be open for you to ring and leave voicemails recording your dancefloor experiences which will make their way onto the new digital Misscoteque archive. 

Catch us on Noods radio earlier that day (3-4pm) discussing misscoteque.world and bringing you sounds of the 80s that took their inspiration from the contemporary fetishisation and fear of technology, including lots of Kraftwerk, vocoder flirtation, and general bleeps and boops.

Kraftwerk – Computer Love, produced in 1978, gave us the inspiration for this event. It’s a beautiful, melodic, synth-driven track laced with melancholy, about loneliness, and seeking connection in TVs and phones. A prophecy of our society’s race towards reliance on technology for human connection? We sure think so. An absolute banger? Indisputably.

Part website, archive and community hub, our new digital platform is a step away from our reliance on social media to connect with our community and archive our world.

The Misscoteque digital archive will hold our collection of photos, ephemera and oral histories from the 5 years we have been running events. It will also be a collaborative site where anyone who attends our events can submit photos, ephemera, gossip, stories, ideas, essays, poems - you name it! - to be archived. Together, let’s record our world and all the fleeting queer histories our dancefloors contain, that otherwise might be lost in the depths of Instagram or the mists of time.

The website will also host a digital version of our community noticeboard, a space where individuals and collectives can share actions, missed connections, parties and more, aiming to facilitate real-world human connection by way of digital space.

A special thanks to the extremely talented Kimberley Dobney who designed and coded the entire digital platform.

There is ground-level entry from the street and the venue is all on one level accessible to wheelchair users. Surfaces on Silverthorne Lane are cobbled and uneven. Assistance dogs are allowed.
