A
event
held at Circomedia
on Saturday 11th October. The event starts at 10:00.
Join us as we gather for a day of exchange and networking and shape the future of advocacy and education in UK contemporary circus.
Energised by this festival’s theme of radical care, from individual wellbeing to social justice, we invite you to a day where we take an ecosystem approach. An opportunity for organisations and freelancers and all those in between, to come together and take the sector’s temperature, meet new faces and share challenges, frustrations, successes and ideas.
Tickets are free and lunch will be provided. The day will be led by an independent facilitator.
The conference will include:
Networking time
A session that asks how circus education is serving the sector, led by Circomedia
An Open Space to discuss topics raised by those in the room
A presentation and consultation session with the National Centre for Circus Arts exploring their vision for leading the UK’s circus sector support organisation.
Please book early so we know you plan to come, and get in touch with [email protected] if you have any questions, thoughts or access requirements.
You can read more about the sessions proposed by Circomedia and National Centre for Circus Arts and the back story of Circus Change-Up below.
How can Circomedia and the National Centre for Circus Arts best support circus artists entering the industry?
Each school will give an overview of the learning outcomes that they aim for in their degree courses and there will be dedicated time set aside for those attending the sessions to talk about their experience and their needs as performers, producers, artistic directors, or anything else. The schools will be interested to hear if there are gaps or opportunities when considering the knowledge and skills needed from new circus artists and conversations might cover performing styles and disciplines, producing or technical understanding, digital, indoor or outdoor, attitudes or behaviours, or other areas that might be important. The schools are keen to listen and understand what the sector needs now and in the near future.
The session will be run by Circomedia’s CEO, Zannah Chisholm and Head of Undergraduate Studies, Rod Laver. They will be joined by the National Centre for Circus Arts’ CEO, Dan Cowdrill and Head of Higher Education, Adrian Porter.
The future of the National Centre for Circus Arts’ support for Circus Change Up
In this session, the National Centre’s CEO, Dan Cowdrill, will offer an overview of their proposals for taking the reins of Circus Change Up, how that might benefit the sector and how the sector can be involved.
A bit about Circus Change Up
Circus Change-Up was a grassroots UK sector-development initiative, facilitated by Kate Webb and born of the findings of the 2020 Circus Snapshot and Slow Thinking events, commissioned by Crying Out Loud and funded by Arts Council England. It convened working groups across key themes, including resource sharing, touring, creative development, inclusion, youth circus, and advocacy, with the expressed aim of designing a coherent, practitioner-led sector support organisation and building collaborative infrastructure for the future. Circus Change up came to the end of its funding in 2023, culminating in a closing conference at Circus City 2023 and a report that you can read here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1pY3dEyaE412VwQkqNOQOgpwSkmE4D0_P/view
