A
event
held at Cloak
on Monday 30th October. The event starts at 18:30.
In this workshop aimed at all abilities of Sober Queers join Sam to reclaim the horrifying through the wonder of BODY HORROR. Hello Doctor Frankenstien*? The monster called & they want their body back. Come along & dip a toe into writing the disgusting other & embrace the duality of monsterhood by reclaiming everything they called you! Write yourself a little body horror poem filled with all the yous you had to kill to make it here to survive!
Horror is littered with gays, often at our expense as either the maniacal slasher or early victim but what if you took that & owned that? Horror is about subversion & to acknowledge the wonder that you have created of yourself when the world is telling you otherwise is a power we can take for ourself.
We want everyone to feel safe but we do have to acknowledge that with the subject matter some work written by other participants may include reclamations of themselves through a gory lens that is not commensurate with your experience & can be triggering. We invite anyone who's joined the workshop to share what they’ve written (to get a taste for performing your work) but we will ask that they provide content warning & context ahead of time so you can choose if you want to listen.
Equal parts paranormal investigator & doomsday prophet, Sam J Grudgings (he/him) is a queer poet from Bristol shortlisted for the Outspoken Poetry Prize 2020. Drawing from analogue body horror, crust punk & the ecosystem of poets exploring the other, his performances are whirlwinds of grief, sporadic outbursts of rehabilitation & the devastating possibility that things can get better.
Please be aware that this is a sober event, you do not need to have a sober lifestyle to join us but please do not consume or bring alcohol into the space.
