A
clubnight
held at Cloak
on Thursday 22nd February. The event starts at 20:00.
BAXU [bai–shoo]
Meaning: 'bass; deep; low’
Origin: El País Vasco
Queer-run soundsystem dance raising money for medical aid in Palestine.
Uncurl your sleepy selves from the depths of hibernation and come warm your toes by the bass bins. We have moved through the darkest months, a winter that has been heavy and emotionally taxing for many. We feel dance is a powerful way to process and integrate these feelings, and coming together to move our bodies in rhythm has been a practice for collective healing since before [his]tory was written. The dance is not an escape, but a place to connect, heal and relate through joy in motion.
The session will be split into two parts:
- part 1 will uplift our hearts and spirits through the power of roots reggae music;
- part 2 will dive into the depths of low-end music as we give space for the darker emotions to arise.
All artists have agreed to gift their time, and Cloak have kindly given us a large discount on hire fee, to help us raise as many funds as possible. All money made once we’ve covered basic costs (transport for artists & system / hire fee) will be dedicated to Palestinian medical aid. Specific details of organisations will be posted nearer the time, we are hoping to support on-the-ground mutual aid networks and research is in progress.
In an effort to ensure our crowd share our understanding of safe(r) spaces, we will be emailing all ticket holders a safe(r) space policy, inspired by the responses we received in our safe(r) spaces survey from our last event. We ask that all ticket holders read the policy before coming to the dance.

ACCESSIBILITY
The dance will be held in the basement of the venue. To access there is a small step in the main doorway from the street followed by a narrow flight of stairs with handrails. There is a further short set of stairs into the event space.
We will have a chill-out space with sofas next to the dance floor and gender-neutral toilets throughout the venue.
We have decided to start the event as early as the venue allows in order to make this dance more accessible for those who struggle with late nights but still love to move their body to music.
