Mbira Music Spirit of the People.
A film directed by Simon Bright, this powerful documentary captures the golden era of Zimbabwean music, featuring legendary artists such as Thomas Mapfumo, Oliver Mtukudzi, and Comrade Chinx. Moving between packed city performances and intimate rural settings, the film traces the roots of their sound in traditional mbira music.
More than a celebration of Zimbabwean music, Mbira Music offers a deeper look at Zimbabwe’s cultural and political history, exploring how music became a tool for spiritual connection, storytelling, and resistance during the War of Liberation.
The evening will also feature Tony Perman, an ethnomusicologist and mbira specialist. He will offer insights into how mbira music has travelled and evolved globally, and will also perform live, bringing the instrument’s sound into the room.
It promises to be a warm and engaging evening, bringing together film, music, and conversation.
We’d love to see you there.
