on Friday 27th May. The event starts at 19:30.
Moussa Kouyate is from a thousand-year-old lineage of elite griots (musician/poets) to the kings of Mali. He grew up in Senegal and became established in Dakar, making koras and playing them in his unique rhythmic style. Moussa's big break came in 1999 when he played at the Edinburgh Festival and then Glastonbury and WOMAD.
Moussa, along with a band member, will play extracts from the new album, interwoven with conversation on stage with his nephew, Gambian kora player and griot historian, Bunja Conteh, reflecting on the role plated by griots and other musicians in forming community.
Bunja's band AfroWelsh Connection plays the second set. Uniquely combining traditional West African griot melodies with their own Welsh flavoured compositions you'll hear gentle vocals, flute, guitar and mandolin. The music is groovy, relaxing and trance-like one moment, uplifting and dancy the next!
Cotham Club presents a series of monthly Friday concerts bringing together one audience from across Bristol communities. Come along and enjoy music and storytelling from global performers along with a warm welcome, great nibbles, and a donation bar. Doors open 7pm!
