LOSE YOURSELF IN THE MYSTERIOUS, HYPNOTIC, TRANCE-INDUCING SACRED GROOVES OF MOROCCAN GNAWA MUSIC.
An ecstatic live set to lift the spirits.
Originally the music of a secret mystical brotherhood of African slaves - melding influences of Arabic north and sub-Saharan south, and made to commune with an invisible spirit world of Moroccan folklore - Gnawa is something very special, with moments of soulful calm and pinnacles of exhilarating mayhem.
The heartbeat of Gnawa is the deep bass of the ancient three-stringed guembri African lute; in the hands of master musician Mohamed Errebbaa it's an instrument of great intricacy and drive. With soaring vocals, inexhaustible energy and a vibrant stage presence, Mohamed creates amazing music; insistent, deeply hypnotic, trance-inducing.
And with a strikingly taut backing band - delicate harp and flute, wailing trumpet, soulful vocal harmonies and impassioned chanting, unbeatable African drum beats, clattering qaraqab metal castanets and minimalist jazz keys - this is an amazing sound.
★★★★
'A wild energy ... [ a ] vibrant, heady sound ... the music blazes away, fierce and wonderful, insistent and thrilling.'
