AN ELECTRIFYING CONTEMPORARY TAKE ON THE TIME-HONOURED GRIOT KORA TRADITION.
Harking from a family that includes some of the world's most well-respected West African musicians, Suntou Susso's musical abilities are outstanding, perhaps unique for his generation. Here, in all his charismatic kora-glory, Suntou wows with an electrifying contemporary take on the 700-year old griot tradition, playing from his acclaimed debut album 'Kanéfonyo' ('Never Give Up') (★★★★ Songlines Magazine).
Since the 13th century, the hallowed tradition of the West African griot has been preserved through the family bloodline; a hereditary caste of troubadour-historians, bards, praise singers, mediators and diplomats who have served as noble advisers in the royal courts and their communities. The griot is a repository of oral tradition, preserving the stories, genealogies and historical narratives of their people. Many griots play the kora, the long-necked 21-stringed lute-harp celebrated for its distinctive, ancient sound and mesmerising quality.
'Gorgeous ... his kora playing shines through on a set of melodic Afro-pop songs.'
