On The Corner Takeover: Penya + Pete OTC at Crofters Rights

A clubnight held at Crofters Rights on Friday 5th April. The event starts at 22:00.

Having been named ‘Label of the Year’ at Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide Awards 2018, our journey continues west as we take - On The Corner Records - on the road to the Crofters Rights for a Friday night knees-up.

We uncover and showcase off-the-grid Jazz, Eastern, Latin and African sounds through our record label, and test out our findings on our radio residency every third Wednesday on Worldwide FM.

Expect late night live music from electronic Afro-Cuban project Penya with OTC label boss – Pete Buckenham – on the DJing and hosting duties. Catch him dropping disco, afro, house and jazz music after Penya’s set til the early hours.

----

Penya is a percussion driven, electronic quartet led by producer and multi-instrumentalist Magnus PI. Their wanderings in Cuba, Turkey, Morocco, India, Peru and Tanzania have garnered a tribal, alternative dance floor take on Afro-Latin rhythms. Penya came through the door of 2018 with a bang. Their debut LP Super Liminal had been carefully guided by On The Corner having started the journey with a pair of conceptual cassette releases and remixes of a first single by Jose Marquez and DJ Khalab in 2016.

Many of Penyas' songs touch on ancient Afro-Cuban melodies sung by the band’s multi-instrumentalist / vocalist Lilli Elina, whilst other tracks are wide open electronic groove scapes that draw on percussion don Jim Le Ms experiences as a ceremonial Bata drummer. Viva Msimang's dubbed-out trombone improvisations, percussion and backing vocal contributions complete the Penya soundscape.

Super Liminal was tipped as one of the LPs of 2018 not to miss. The album sold out and the band were soon taking their club ready percussive electronica to festivals around Europe. A prime slot at Worldwide Festival, Leysin led the band around Europe and the UK with highlight’s including a support slot for Sons of Kemet at the innovative Brainchild Festival. They finished the year with a slot at WorldwideFM’s second birthday party!

Penyas' releases have been hailed by Gilles Peterson and Tom Ravenscroft, (BBC 6 Music), Nick Luscombe (BBC Radio 3), Jeremy Sole (KRCW) Worldwide FM (Thris Tian and Will LV ), Bonobo, Bandcamp, Best Before (Channel 4), Boiler Room, dj Khalab, NTS Radio, Soho and Radar Radio.

The band have been ferreting away in the studio so far this year, so we can’t wait to see what new material they will be testing out on their first headline gig in Bristol.
