Holysseus Fly plays her first ever headline show in Bristol.
Holysseus Fly, vocalist and pianist from award winning Ishmael Ensemble, steps out as a solo artist for the first time with her debut single Marigold (16 Sep, Severn Songs Records). Detailing the struggle to find her creative identity after surviving cancer, Holysseus Fly’s raw vocal boldly tells a story of hope against a backdrop of dark minimal textures.
In 2019 Ishmael Ensemble released their debut album “A State of Flow” to critical acclaim, bagging The Guardian’s Contemporary Album of The Month, and cementing the band as firm favourites of BBC 6 Music’s Gilles Peterson & Tom Ravenscroft. Stand out track Full Circle, co-written by Holysseus Fly, was featured on BBC Radio 1. The international acclaim led to the Holysseus Fly co-arranging McCoy Tyner’s “Search for Peace” for the band to perform as part of Blue Note Records’ Re:Imagined compilation, with Holysseus providing vocals and piano alongside some of the UK’s most prestigious jazz talent. Visions of Light, the follow up 2021 album continued to build on the growing success, named as one of 6Music’s Albums of the Year.
Already known for her evocative performances, Holysseus Fly’s debut single Marigold holds the listener in a way few vocalists can. The first single from a whole EP, set for release in 2023, produced with Rob Pemberton (The Staves) and mixed by Iain Berryman (Wolf Alice, Florence & The Machine, Beabadoobe). The signature vocal creates a unique blend with her love of sultry, romantic piano and dark minimal textures. A true statement of intent from an artist with a big future.
