Unit Ama / Olanza / Foot Foot at Dareshack
Headfirst Editor's Pick

"Cult Newcastle post-noise-rock outfit somewhere between the free jazz-leanings of Tortoise and the shambolic free-wheeling spirit of the Dead C. Fans of Ought take note."

DIY collab night from Pull The Strings + Totality feverishly welcome Newcastle post-rock maestros Unit Ama to Bristol. Local support from ace newcomers Foot Foot and solid buzzmongers Olanza.

Unit Ama
"A reclusive and shadowy band from Newcastle, The Unit Ama have been active for a little while now. This self-titled album was recorded in 2003, although released by Gringo not until 2005. The band's approach to songcraft owes much to Rumah Sakit and the better-known Storm and Stress -- bands whose recordings date back quite a long time now. And it's worth mentioning that not many bands have the skills to pull off what these bands pull off.
Much of The Unit Ama's music alternates between post-punk drive and controlled noise. The odd time signatures and the arrhythmic convulsions spike the sound. There aren't always melodies to hang on. There aren't always rhythms you can tap your feet to. It's like riding Space Mountain: you can't see or predict what's ahead but you welcome the unexpected nature of the ride."

Olanza
Olanza are a three-piece instrumental band that have long explored the interplay between loud guitars and heavy drum rhythms. In recent times Aron Ward (Repoman, Harpoon) and Shaun Sepr (Five Knuckle, Fuk) have been joined by Annie Gardiner (Hysterical Injury) on bass taking the intricate post rock of Polvo into the weightier region of Harvey Milk or Lungfish. A brand-new album recorded with Wayne Adams (Bear Bites Horse) awaits for Spring 2022 via the label Human Worth.

Foot Foot
Bristol based five piece, Foot Foot are Esther, Jesse, Amelia, Sam and Llyr. Post and Math Rock meets Alt Folk. Think Slint, Swirlies and Vashti Bunyan. Both ethereal and harsh, Foot Foot pit heavy distortion against dreamy vocals and swirling strings, melodic bass riffs against crashing drums.
