ARTIST TALK - Table for One by Vincen Beeckman at East Bristol Books
See event details

A event on Thursday 20th November. The event starts at 18:00.

Vincen Beeckman collaborates with individuals and communities whose lives run parallel to his own - connected through shared space yet held apart by social boundaries. He finds ways to dissolve lines, creating collective projects that refuse the simple binary of photographer and subject.

Previous projects include Take Cracks (2020), a collaboration with unhoused individuals near Brussels Central Station; Les Intimes (2014-present), where Vincen acts as the appointed photographer of the Ansquer family, documenting the joys and tribulations of Marylène and her five children; as well as La Devinière (2013-present), working with original residents of an institutional psychotherapy centre that opened in 1976.

Vincen will be in conversation with Alejandro Acin (IC Visual Lab) discussing his new project ‘Table for One’. The project began in 2011 when he was invited to create a project in the town of Dudelange, Luxembourg. On his first day, he stopped for lunch at Hang Chow, a local Chinese restaurant named after Hangzhou district. During his meal, Beeckman had an idea: he would eat lunch and dinner at Hang Chow every day for a week, letting the waiters choose his dishes. At the same time he would collaborate with staff, making pictures and gathering family photos, postcards and ephemera. What began as an experiment unfolded into a multi-chapter project, involving restaurants from Iran to Brazil and Rwanda.

Vincen will also present a series of his books, with opportunities to purchase copies. Following the talk, please join us next door at IC Visual Lab for the opening of Vincen’s exhibition.
