Join us to celebrate the launch of legendary poet Koef Nilson's latest poetry collection *Aerogramme,* published by Kulvert Press. Come for an evening of readings from the book by Nielsen, alongside Bristol-based poets Samatar Elmi and Fran Pope.
*Aerogramme* rediscovers Koef Nielsen, a poet who has been present in Northern poetry since the sixties. These careful poems and observations on the natural world, are reminiscent of the poetry of Gary Snyder and Philip Whalen.
Koef Nielsen (b. 1948) has been published by Tom Pickard’s Ultima Thule press and Pig Press, which embedded him in the counterculture alongside Robert Creeley, Thom Gunn and Barry MacSweeney. His 1970 Morden Tower pamphlet with Richard Caddel was edited by Bloodaxe Books’ Neil Astley. In ‘Aerogramme’ Nielsen presents an unseen collection of poetry from the 1980’s to the present. His work is informed and influenced by his friendship with Tom Pickard and the readings and happenings at Morden Tower in Newcastle.
Samatar Elmi is a poet, researcher, and an international education consultant. Winner of the 2021 Geoffrey Dearmer Prize, his poems have appeared in Poetry Review, Prairie Schooner, Magma, Iota and anthologised in *More Fiya*, *Filigree*, *After Plath*, and *The Echoing Gallery*. Elmi’s first poetry collection, *The Epic of Cader Idris,* was published by Bloomsbury in 2024.
Fran Pope is a writer, translator and music journalist. She works as music editor for Freestyle Bristol, as well as writing reviews and features for other publications. She is particularly interested in electronic music and feminism. She has published two poetry collections, *The Brazen Forecast* (Cactus Press) and *Quarters* (Ekstasis Editions). Fran also runs the Waxing Crescent spoken word night at the Clifton Community Bookshop.
