Come along to this inspiring and creative workshop, which will include writing exercises, group discussions, mentorship and live readings. Facilitated by Samatar Elmi and Asmaa Jama.

Who Can Take Part?

Inclusive by design, this program is open to all members of the Somali diaspora regardless of experience level, and demographic boundaries of age, gender and socioeconomic background. We also extend a warm invitation to any individuals with a passion and/or commitment to Somali culture and the oral arts.

This workshop is connected to the International Anglo-Somali Poetry Anthology. The anthology is co-edited by Warsan Shire and Samatar Elmi (to be published in 2028).

Samatar Elmi (Knomad Spock), alongside Asmaa Jama, bring extensive experience in literature, poetry, and workshop facilitation.

Samatar Elmi is a published poet with a strong track record of live performance, editorial work, and workshop facilitation. His work has been recognized nationally and internationally, including live readings on BBC Radio 4 and at festivals such as Latitude, and he have led creative writing workshops and retreats for diverse audiences, including young writers and underrepresented communities. He has also edited multiple literary magazines, mentoring emerging voices and supporting the development of writers across the UK and internationally.

Asmaa Jama is a poet, educator, and experienced workshop facilitator. She has delivered participatory writing programs, cultural events, and mentorship initiatives designed to nurture creative talent while fostering community cohesion. Her work combines literary expertise with a strong commitment to amplifying diverse voices within the diaspora.
