MIM SULEIMAN (Live)
'A small woman with a big voice', Mim Suleiman's new live show truly needs to be seen and heard, and stomped to to be believed. She will be bringing a 7-piece live band to Bristol's Exchange to blast away any winter blues with her genre-mutating fusion of Afrobeat, disco and electronica, driven by powerful, soulful vocals, mostly sung in her native Swahili. The Hi-Life Hi-Fi crew is honoured to be hosting this unique artist, who has performed with Damon Albarn's acclaimed Africa Express train tour, as well as some of Africa's biggest music stars, including Tony Allen, Amadou and Mariam and Baaba Maal.
For a taster of the kind of magic you can expect, be sure to check out her two recent solo albums, produced by Maurice Faulton:
Anyone with even one toe in the waters of the UK electronic music scene will know the name Bass Clef. We'll let this trombone-toting beat scientist speak for himself:
'My music has mutant strains of Afrobeat, juju, kuduro, kwaito, cumbia, soca, soca, more soca, grime, UK funky... well to me anyway. It's all just music innit? It's up to you guys to decide what it's called! It's no po-faced laptop set for sure - no laptop in sight - it's supposed to be fun, to induce compulsive dancing, and to be different every time. Live trombones, drum machines, samples, cowbell, whistles, thunder drums...all dubbed out black ark style.. '
Hi-Life Hi-Fi residents Local and Clarkey will also be selecting the finest records from Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Zimbabwe and every other corner of Africa to get your feet and booty warmed up, and Mango Park will be spinning a heavy mix of Afro house, kuduro and kwaito, ensuring non-stop vibes until the end of the night.
