'Watch Outrageously Cool Japanese Band Otoboke Beaver Rock Your Socks Off' The FADER
“Not new, just new to us. Unhinged garage-punk from Japanese all-woman quartet. They tour the UK in May - not to be missed" - The Guardian.
"The Kyoto-based Otoboke Beaver takes in the history of Japanese punk and runs with scissors in hand towards the bonkers-noise of early Boredoms, Afrirampo's uninhibited avant-punk, and the revved-up garage-rock of Shonen Knife (and maybe a little bit of John Zorn's blistering Naked City, just to put it over the top). Punk is rarely this charmingly vicious." - NPR
Otoboke Beaver are an all-female quartet from Kyoto, Japan, consisting of Accorinrin (lead vocals and guitar), Yoyoyoshie (guitar and vocals), Hiro-chan (bass and vocals) and Pop (drums and vocals). The band’s name is taken from a local ‘Love Hotel’.
Taking a nod to the likes of Melt Banana, Shonen Knife, Bo Ningen, Guitar Wolf and The Boredoms, they play brilliant noisy, ballsy punk rock and sing in Japanese (or Kyoto slang).
Crazed, deranged garage, punk-rock-pop at break-neck speed, the band are influenced by western Riot Grrrl attitudes and the sounds of punk and angular post-rock. Live, they play frantic fast-paced 18-20 song sets and often invade the audience, stating "you will not able to take your eyes off us".
In 2016 Damnably Records released the compilation album "Okoshiyasu!! Otoboke Beaver" followed by the new EP "Bakuro Book", both of which gleaned considerable radio play from Gideon Coe/Tom Ravenscroft (BBC 6 Music), Vic Galloway (BBC Radio Scotland), John Kennedy (Radio X) & Dani Charlton (Amazing Radio). A whirlwind 6-date UK tour followed of mostly sold-out shows plus a Radio X session. And now the girls are back!
All the band members have full-time office jobs and it’s culturally frowned upon to take more than a week’s holiday in Japan, so the band can only tour in very short bursts! So you are advised to make the effort to catch them live on this very rare opportunity.
From Busan, South Korea, Say Sue Me are a new signing to Damnably records (via Electric Muse) and a unique act that play very serious instrumental 60's Surf as well as dance-able, catchy fuzzy, Indie-Rock.
Their debut album; 'We’ve Sobered Up', and EP 'Big Summer Night' contains songs that mix the members' favorite 60’s surf music and 90’s American indie scene feelings. Damnably will release a compilation of these releases very soon.
It is sure that “Sea” and “Surfing” have become vehicles for their songs’ inspiration because their practice room is located in five minutes on foot from the Gwangalli Beach in Busan.
Sadly their drummer Semin had an accident and has been in a comatose state for several months, so the band and Electric Muse recently raised £11,000 for his healthcare. Please have a look at their fundraiser here: https://tumblbug.com/semin/process/17528
Huw from the England's Lazarus Clamp sits in for Semin on the Golden Week Tour.
