Sheela-na-gig Clay Workshop at Fishponds, Bristol
£10

A event on Thursday 8th January. The event starts at 19:30.

Join us for a creative, hands-on workshop exploring the mysterious and iconic figure of the Sheela-na-Gig. We’ll begin with a gentle discussion about who the Sheela-na-Gig is, what she represents, and how each of us interprets her imagery today. There are no right or wrong answers—just shared curiosity and personal insight.

Guided by this conversation, you will then create your own Sheela-inspired figure in clay. Using simple sculpting techniques, you’ll shape a piece that reflects your individual understanding of the Sheela-na-Gig—whether that’s protection, power, humour, fertility, sexuality, resilience, or something entirely your own.

If you would like to have your sculpture kiln-fired, this can be arranged for an additional cost of £5. Once it has been fired, I will email you and you can collect it at a later date.

This workshop is suitable for all levels; no clay experience is needed. You’ll leave with a unique handmade sculpture and a deeper connection to this enigmatic symbol of feminine strength and folklore.

Jez Maurice is the space holder. She spends a lot of her time unearthing and exploring the mysteries of Sheelanagigs. She has travelled across England, Ireland, Germany, France, Spain and Belgium exploring pre-existing Sheelanagigs and leaving hand carved ones as memorials in sites where atrocities towards women have taken place.
Jez has delivered workshops, talks and ceremonies around the Sheela-na-gig for Bristol based collectives 'Red Web' and 'Of the Wild'.

Entry requirements: 14+, any under 18s accompanied by 21+ adult 1:1 ratio
