on Sunday 11th May. The event starts at 13:00.
Afon Sistema are incredibly excited to be hosting a Maracatu workshop with Mestre Adriano, of the Maracatu Nação Cambinda Estrela, in Bristol!
Mestre Adriano is a talented musical director and performer, and an expert in the Afro-Brazilian rhythms of Maracatu, Samba de Coco and Afoxé. It's his first ever time here in Bristol, and we're very lucky to have him come to share his knowledge with us.
Some musical experience is preferred, but not essential. All instruments will be provided, so there's only the need to bring your lovely self!
We'll have a short break in the middle of the day, so bring snacks and hydration to keep yourself fuelled!
Please note: all proceeds from the workshop will go directly to Mestre Adriano and his travel costs.
We can't wait to see you there and share a wicked day together - vamos embora!!
A tiny bit about Afon Sistema and Maracatu:
Born of African, Portuguese and Indigenous influences, Maracatu de Baque Virado is a culture and tradition of resistance, hailing mainly from Pernambuco, a state in North-Eastern Brazil.
Nowadays, its bass heavy, syncopated rhythms and beautiful melodies are popular across the world, including in Bristol, home to the percussion and singing group, Afon Sistema.
Founded by Jackson Lapes and Jake Calvert, the group has enjoyed over 10 years of shared knowledge, respect and fantastically fun times.
