Severn Seas Festival at Harbourside, Bristol

A event on Saturday 22nd August. The event starts at 20:00.

An exciting new day out for Bristol is due to launch on Saturday 22nd August, in the form of Severn Seas Festival, organised by local sea shanty group The Longest Johns in partnership with No.1 Harbourside and the Harbourside Market.

Six sea shanty bands - local and far-flung - will take to the stage in No.1 Harbourside, the Cascade Steps and Under The Stars, as well as riding on the Bristol Ferry Boats to entertain the passengers. The aim is to entertain and educate the Bristol public in sea shanties and how closely they're linked with the area's heritage and cultural history. It promises to be a fun day out for all the family, with a wide range of songs and styles; from slow songs about shipwrecks and the problems of sailing life, to fast, toe-tapping songs about romance and tongue-in-cheek shenanigans - not forgetting lots of audience participation!

Organiser Josh Bowker explained: 'Having sung sea shanties in The Longest Johns for over three years, we've realised the wider public needs a proper introduction to the wonders of shantying! Bristol's the perfect place for a sea shanty festival, with such a rich maritime history; it just makes us all the more excited to be hosting these great bands here in our home town.'

The day will run from 1pm till the finale at 7pm, around the central edge of the harbourside. The organisers are hoping to make it an annual event, with more bands, more stages, and additional workshops and interactive features next year.
