Smorgasbord World of Music Festival at Hen and Chicken
pay what you feel. Entry by cash or online donation.

A event on Saturday 31st August. The event starts at 13:00.

Gloriously soulful Americana duo Sarah Larkham and Elliot Hall (Larkham & Hall) host a fabulous whirlwind of world music, raising funds for the mental health music organisation Mind Your Music.

Performers include: Batala Bristol Samba Reggae Band, Chai For All, Sarah Curtis, Nóra Gönczi, Mighty Mighty, Flamenco Loco, and the Onika Venus Band.

Mind Your Music (established: 2003; patron: Sir Mark Rylance) works with those struggling with mental health difficulties in Bristol and the surrounding areas; often among the most vulnerable and marginalised people in our society. It uses music to help change lives through the provision of socially inclusive music workshops and concerts, with service-users taking an active role in the creation and performance of the music.

Mind Your Music was the winner of the Quartet Community Foundation Penny Johnstone award (2017) in recognition of its groundbreaking work.

Brazilian singer Jayne Guimarães and the Batala Bristol Samba Reggae Band open the festival with a set of pure, infectious fun, its hypnotic, dancefloor-friendly hybrid sound deftly blending invigorating Brazilian samba drum music with reggae rhythms.

The multinational, multilingual band Chai For All ('chai' is Hebrew for 'life') plays an infectiously entertaining mish-mosh of powerful Yiddish music-hall songs, impassioned Arabic folk traditionals, whirling klezmer, and Middle Eastern dance tunes; its 'fierce brew is emotive, soulful and unlike anything you'll have ever seen' (Bristol24/7).

Hungarian harpist-singer Nóra Gönczi and contemporary Sufi-folk singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Sarah Curtis showcase their gorgeous, characterful voices and sumptuous playing on striking contemporary and traditional folk songs, dressing them gently with beautiful arrangements on the guitar and harp.

BBC Radio One John Peel Session veterans Mighty Mighty pack a powerful sonic punch, playing spirited indie-pop with a contemporary rock'n'roll edge, a fervent nod to the mod, and a sprinkling of shimmering shoegaze.

Passionate, swaggering, and artful, the rattle, thunder and scrape of the dancer's driving footwork underscores Flamenco Loco's fiery traditional and contemporary flamenco music.

With a powerful sense of creative freedom, soulful Jamaican singer-songwriter Onika Venus and her outstanding band deepen and diversify her reggae roots with r'n'b, pop, and funk into beguiling music of distinction.
