On a sunny, summer afternoon in the midst of wartime England, seven children play
in the Forest of Dean; the boys fight over apples, chase squirrels and imagine being
fighter pilots whilst Angela and Audrey play house in the barn.

So far, so idyllic. But as the hour ticks by, dark shadows intrude, innocence is lost and
we see the seeds of human cruelty as through a microscope.

Dennis Potter’s seminal play in which adult actors play a gang of seven-year-olds
larking about is barely an hour long. Yet for all its smallness, it remains one of the
most disturbing plays ever written.
