Most of the time, we end up doing what we do most of the time! Us humans are creatures of habit. In fact, life would be almost impossible without habits, and don’t we all know how hard it is to change them! Most New Year resolutions peter out by the second week, and generally efforts to learn new positive habits require a lot of effort and fail most of the time. Long term maintenance of new behaviours is also a challenge. So what is it that makes change so difficult? What are the secrets to replacing bad habits with positive ones?
In this talk you will learn the mechanisms of habits, what habits actually do once they are learned and how to break and form habits. Professor Bas Verplanken will also touch upon habits of thinking and how they can affect our mental health and self esteem, giving insights on how to deal with negative thoughts and encourage positive mental habits.
Prof. Bas Verplanken has been a professor of social psychology at the University of Bath since 2006. He has had a special interest in researching habits, both behavioural and mental. Prof. Verplanken will draw on what he has learned in the domains of environmental, health, and consumer psychology across a 25 year research career.
