OUT WITH THE OLD AND IN WITH THE NEW!

A Fistful of Film kicks off its “All the Colours of Giallo” series with an entry from the director that made Giallo synonymous with Italian horror, Dario Argento.

Giallo, from the Italian for yellow, was the wholesale adaptation of a series of yellow paperback murder mystery novels into horror films, pioneered by Mario Bava (Blood and Black Lace) and made famous by Argento.

Our first pick, ‘Tenebrae’ (1982) is a must watch late entry into the Giallo canon. Set in Rome’s backstreets, Argento peers not at the Trevi Fountain, but into the life and miseries of an American mystery author Peter Neal (Franciosa). Drawn from his own experience with an enthusiastic fan, who traded in praise for death threats on the set of his previous film ‘Inferno’, Tenebrae turns its perverse eye to the relation between an author and a ‘fan’ but this time lives are at stake.

Neal finds himself embroiled in a personal hunt for a crazed, razor wielding killer who appears to be taking a little too much inspiration from his books. With a Goblin soundtrack and all the twists and turn and turns of any good Giallo, Tenebrae outstrips the reviled status it gained as one of the infamous video nasties and cements itself as essential viewing for lovers of horror.
