A event held at The Ill Repute on Sunday 12th July. The event starts at 20:00.
Coming up Sunday July 12th, SOMETHING OF THE NIGHT ventures away from the familiar mean streets of New York and Los Angeles to Paris, for our first overseas noir. RIFIFI has all the grit and thrills of the genre, but with a sprinkling of French suave sophistication and je ne sais quoi.
Blacklisted by Hollywood for his left-wing affiliations and exiled to France, Jules Dassin directed Rififi on a shoe-string budget, yet conceived a film now recognised as one of the all-time great film noirs. Jean Servais stars as a criminal recently released from prison, who’s persuaded to join a team of thieves plotting to pull off a seemingly impossible crime - robbing a highly secured jewel store in Paris.
With its hardboiled characters, double-crossing, and a half-hour-long, almost silent heist scene that’s one of the best ever put to film, Rififi proved the French can do noir just as well as the Americans.
