Vocal percussion with Jon Sterckx

This workshop will give an introduction to the use of the Indian percussive languages of North Indian tabla and South Indian Konnakol as a tool for musicians and vocalists to use in their own music making. Working with the Indian rhythmic vocal syllables, the workshop will also give an introduction to Indian rhythmic time cycles and some of the approaches to rhythm used in Indian music.
After the workshop, Jon will give a tabla solo performance, with demonstrations of the use of the vocal syllables in tabla compositions and performance.

Jon Sterckx is an innovative tabla player & percussionist with over thirty years experience of working with non western percussion and a variety of music genres and traditions. He has delivered vocal percussion workshops at WOMAD, Musicport, Drum Camp, Tribe of Doris and World Music Workshop Festival and at Colleges and Universities. As a percussionist he has performed internationally and at at many of the UK's 'World Music' Festivals, Melas and other Cultural events. He has also performed twice at the globally renowned TED events.
